Economy, standards stand in the way of NFC

2009 was supposed to be the year of NFC but problems persist

By And Williams, Associate Editor

Initially, 2009 was supposed to be a year of progress for Near Field Communication. But with tough economic times on tap many commercial rollouts will be pushed until at least 2010.

The tough economy is just one obstacle in the way of widespread NFC deployments. The lack of devices remains a problem and a clear business model on how everyone will make money off the technology has yet to be figured out.

But for 2009 the economy will likely be the primary hindrance. “One of the things that was noticeable at the American Public Transportation Association conference last year was the absence of announcements about NFC happening in 2009,” says Jeff Fonseca, director of business development and sales for one of NFC’s founders, NXP Semiconductors.

Still he remains upbeat. “From our standpoint we fully expect to have commercial solutions starting in 2010,” he adds. Originally, some commercial projects were set for 2009 but carriers have pushed back until 2010. In Europe, he believes, there will be some commercial deployments in 2009 with Nokia leading the way.

TWIC Compliance Starts Today; Critics Angry Card Readers Not Deployed

Today marks the national compliance deadline when all workers and mariners needing access to secure maritime and port areas nationwide will have to at least flash a government-approved biometric identification card before entry.

Identity management is key to the proper operation of cloud computing

One of the hot buttons, or buzz phrases, these days is "cloud computing." Boiled down, it's just like client-server computing except: a) you don't own the server; b) you don't know where the server really is; and c) you may not even know where your data resides. All that aside, there remains the issues of authentication and authorization; provisioning; entitlement management; governance; compliance; risk management; single sign-on; and all of the other facets of identity management. Is anybody even thinking about those?

GlobalPlatform releases match-on-card paper

GlobalPlatform, the specification body for smart card infrastructure, has published a white paper to explain how its existing technology can add value to biometric match-on-card solutions from research and development cost-savings and improved time to market, to compliance with industry security requirements.

“The GlobalPlatform Value Proposition for Biometric Match-on-Card Verification,” targets government officials, project managers and consultants advising on the implementation of biometric match-on-card programs, alongside smart card technical audiences. It discusses how current GlobalPlatform specifications deliver the required security and privacy to enable the deployment of a secure, interoperable and flexible biometric match-on-card solution.

GlobalPlatform on-card access control technology is also discussed within the white paper. This function can facilitate the delivery of multiple applications on one card, with each application able to securely utilize the match-on-card biometric in a flexible way without having to become biometric aware.

The document is free to download from here.
